Short description
A detective chess puzzle played backwards: a game is over, and you unwind it move by move back to the starting position in exactly the given number of moves.
Long description
Every case in Checkmate Rewind begins at the end. A chess game is over, and the final position is the only evidence left on the board. Take the moves back one at a time, return captured pieces, undo castling, en passant and promotions, and restore the starting position in exactly the number of moves the case allows.
The game turns retrograde analysis, a classic branch of chess problem composition, into a hands-on puzzle. An Academy of short lessons teaches the backwards moves, and 55 cases in six chapters build up from quick blunders to famous opening traps and puzzles where the obvious answer is wrong. A new case of the day is drawn from real Lichess games, the same for everyone in the world. Investigator's questions, detective's seals and awards reward careful reasoning.
Free, no sign-up, in 15 languages, on phones and computers.
